BACKGROUND

[Podcast on this blog post is available here, also embedded as the last video]

Electronic Media or E-Media in short as defined by the dictionary is the distribution and promotion of work and artists via email, the Internet, websites and other non-mechanical means.

Electronic Media – the distribution technology and promotion of work and artists via email, the Internet, websites and other non-mechanical means.

It is a concept that has become more prevalent, especially since the turn of the 21st century,as advances in technology has changed the way how people consume media. In this blog post we will explore what E-media is,how it affects us and why it is becoming increasingly popular.

The evolution of Technology and Humanity

HISTORY

Traditionally when we take a look at the history of Media, it is notable that the print industry has been around the longest. People were reading newspapers and books hundreds of years ago, and still do so now.(“The Birth and Death of Newspapers”,n.d) During the 20th century, there were major changes in how people consumed media content. The invention of electricity brought about new technologies such as radio and television.

The late 20th century saw the development of the internet and the introduction of E-Media.Over the past decade, advances of technology has seen the usage of E-Media increase significantly.

THE MANY FACES OF E-MEDIA

As E-Media is a rather generic term and encompasses many subjects, therefore in this blog post we will be looking at the two most popular forms of E-Media. Electronic print(E-Print) and the Internet (Web 2.0).

E-Media is a rather generic term and encompasses many subjects

_________________________________________________________________________

E-PRINT (WHAT IS IT?)

E-Print is the convergence of print and technology, it is an interactive means of published content that can be accessible through a multitude of devices. Like its traditional counterpart,E-print can consist of E-books,E-magazines, E-newspapers just to name a few.

Unlike traditional prints, where the user generally have to flip through pages to consume published content. The way users interact with E-print is more advanced, and possibly more interactive too.For example reading an interactive E-magazine where readers are able to access content such as videos , playing them inside the E-magazine.(Charles.J,2010)

Another example are E-books, where a dictator (a program for reading on screen text) can be used by users to narrate the story without having the user navigate through pages of the E-book.

Here is a video of an interactive E-Print publication: Wired Magazine for Apple’s iPad

THE INTERNET (WHAT IS IT?)

The internet has played a major role in aiding the rise of E-Media.

The internet, integrating various forms of media into one big hub.

The internet is defined by the dictionary as a vast computer network around the world that is interconnected, sharing a vast variety of information and content.

-Source

Just like E-Prints, the internet is an interactive medium. The most unique feature of the internet is that it acts as a sort of hub for all types of media. It is not uncommon to find a traditional “old-media” available in some form or another on the internet. For instance  instead of going to the cinema to watch movies, you can now simply rent or purchase a movie online, through services such as Netflix.(James.L, 2010)

Do not underestimate the power of E-Media and the internet, used correctly E-Media can be more effective than its traditional variants

Do not underestimate the power of E-Media and the internet, used correctly E-Media can be more effective than its traditional variants. For instance YouTube, a video sharing website has contributed to the success of many people. A recent example being, Justin Bieber a popular singer whom was talent scouted on YouTube, who went on to sign a recording contract with major music labels. His success might not have been possible without the Internet.(“Justin Bieber”,2010)

_________________________________________________________________________

WHY IT MATTERS?

It matters because E-Media is becoming more prevalent in society,it can be argued that E-Media has:

  • Allowed media to be accessible regardless of geographic location
  • Pioneered new forms of communication(e.g. social networking)
  • Integration of multiple formats of Media into one
  • Opened up the possibilities to potentially create a better media experience for content consumers.
  • New possibilities of interactivity

_________________________________________________________________________

CONCLUSION – WHAT TO EXPECT?

What can we expect from hereon? The rise of E-Media as a new format for content has resulted in the decline of traditional media. In this blog post E-print was mentioned because the print industry has been heavily affected by the rising popularity of E-Media.

readership_graphJerilee (n.d) suggests that establishments in the print industry, especially newspapers have faced significant problems as readership declines year over year.Using newspapers as an example, the financial survival of newspapers might be endangered.

However if newspapers (*not limited to) embrace E-Media faster and take advantage of the advantages that E-Media offers, newspaper might have a chance for survival.(eg.Look at how wired magazine has embraced the concept of E-Media *First video)

In this time and age,one has to embrace E-Media as an emerging format for delivering media.

  1. I believe E-media embraces the new technology and implanted itself into our lifes. But E-media affects the printing companies like Straits times Singapore if it does not embrace E-media. Many people prefer the normal way of reading a newspaper which is through flipping paper. If E-books comes out in Singapore, it will encourage a lazy way of reading. But E-media is a revolution and I can’t argue with that.

  2. E-media has definitely make our life more convenient. An advantage of E-media eliminating the printing industry is that lesser trees are being cut down. This can be a great help to the world. However, E-media has resulted to the increase in the amount of electricity the world is using. This can be quite a serious matter as well. So I think there are no win-win situation for E-media to replace the printing industries.

  3. You are right in saying that there’s massive movement towards E-media now, and it is revolutionising how info gets distributed. Do you think that with the movement, will come the end of old media as we know it?

Quite a comprehensive look at E-media, with some useful examples and videos included. Good attempt with the podcast – you could have included some backgrd music, or some audio effects to make it a little more snappy.

You have some useful links at the bottom and you also included some references. It would help to incorporate the links in the post more seamlessly.

E- media is definitely some thing massive and is going to have a huge impact on most people lives!! The reason i didn’t put everybody is because i know someone does not use the computer in my family.
Reading Straits Time using the E-media is a new way for people and it saves the trees(paper) plus it is also free. However, some people still prefer reading on paper as it is less brighter and does not strain their eyes as much as reading from the computer.

  5. Great information on the Rising of E-Media, E-Media has really over take the use of printing (Old Media). When I walk around town and mrt stations etc. Most of the advertising poster I saw are screen advertising, however there’s still printing poster there. But I guess as time pass by, you’ll no longer see printed posters anymore. I think it will be all E-Media. =)

  6. Yep there is definitely a big move towards the use on new media. however I feel that it isn’t really right to say that old media will be completely phased out anytime soon. Most major companies still use old media to advertise and plenty of relevent news are usually found through old media first like news papers. If new media were to take over old media completely, it has to be more accessible and easier to use than most of the new media at the moment.

E-Media is getting more popular as time goes by and i can see many places are now installed TV for advertising. However it still can’t totally take over Old Media as each of this media has its own good when comes to advertising.

Give it enough time and perhaps Old Media will go the way of the dinosaurs. We are living in interesting times where technology is advancing at an incredible rate, 10 years ago the idea of a modern smartphone was practically impossible, yet look at where we are now.

Smartphones have more processing power than the computers 20 years ago.Only time will tell, if E-Media achieves total domination.

E-media ceratinly has its own merits has has obviously become a force of its own, comparable to the old media. However, the old media still has some advantages over the E-media. You can’t clip discount coupons from the E-media, and you need internet connection to have access to the contents that the internet can offer, something the old media does not require

Actually nowadays, discount coupons are pretty widespread through the use of E-Media.For example there are QR codes,Quick Response Codes which allow you to take a photo of through a smartphone. The tag reader application will then translate it to a e-coupon which you can flash it to say; a cashier. In order to receive special offers etc.

Yes its true that you will need an internet connection to access e-media content, however internet access is only going to be more wide spread as the years progress.

E media is taking over but not completely. It has its advantages as programming is much more friendlier than cutting trees.with wireless connection everywhere now, just a click on your mobile or laptops you can read the news without taking the few steps to go to a vendor and buy a paper. but the old media is still in, even 50 years from now, i believe there will still be newspapers ard.

Its always good to have a choice,I believe that newspaper will still be around in the next few years, at least locally. As the local media industry has not really made efforts in embracing E-Media.

Where are our E-Publications SPH, Media corp?

while there are various sources of content for e media, there might actually be more information that are wrongly posted/not updated on the internet about a situation than the average internet user would suspect.

very often we google our results and simply accepts the top few hits relating to our search as ‘facts’, however how often do we actually cross reference our info and suspect if the info is accurate? even wikipedia is an open encyclopedia, most of its content can be modified by ANYONE, EVERYONE that can create a wiki account(it simply takes a few minutes)

Like you’ve mentioned, E-Media is good because it allows one to access the media no matter where they are and this is important because it is more flexible and people do not have to waste their money to buy a newspaper when they can read it off the internet. Knowledge gets pass on faster and people can just delete it after reading or listening and it is hassle-free.

I enjoyed reading your blog,as it consist of a lot of information on the journey that the media came from the stage of traditional era to modern era.Personally I feel the collapse of print media is due to the rise of new E media.People are loosing the interaction with print media. At the same time as the write described E media is very effective as it reaches the stage of realsing E books ,E Magazines. Even though still there are people who are stick to newspapers and believe what it delivers is more accurate than other E media sources. Anyway lets wait and see the what will be the next revolution of new media.
